K-Clinic Glossary 2025 : Korean Beauty Clinic Guide for Foreigners (EN · KR)
Korea is famous for K-beauty and “skin clinics”, but the vocabulary is confusing:
시술, 관리, 패키지, 이벤트… even many Koreans struggle to explain these in English.
This guide is a language & culture glossary for foreign visitors –
no medical advice, only words, flow, and etiquette you’ll see on signs, websites, and during consultations.

1. Types of Clinics & People · 어떤 곳이고, 누가 일하나
When you walk around Gangnam or Hongdae, you see signs like 피부과, 성형외과, 에스테틱.
Here’s what they usually mean – in simple English, with short Korean terms in brackets (KR).
Clinic Types · 클리닉 종류
Dermatology Clinic (KR: 피부과)
skin-focused medical clinic
A medical clinic focused on skin concerns – acne, redness, pigmentation, etc.
On signs, you’ll see words like “피부과의원, 더마클리닉” which all belong to this category.
Plastic Surgery Clinic (KR: 성형외과)
plastic & cosmetic surgery center
Known worldwide as “K-plastic surgery”.
Not every visit is about surgery though – many clinics also do consultations and non-surgical procedures.
Aesthetic / Beauty Salon (KR: 에스테틱, 피부관리실)
non-medical beauty shop
Focused on facials, massages, and beauty care without medical acts.
Legally different from hospitals/clinics – think of it more as a “beauty salon for skin”.
People in the Clinic · 누가 무엇을 하나
Doctor / Director (KR: 의사, 원장님)
licensed medical doctor
The main medical professional, often called “원장님” (director) in Korean.
If you want to speak directly with the doctor, you can say:
“원장님과 상담 받고 싶어요.” – “I’d like to consult with the doctor.”
Consultant (KR: 상담실장, 실장님)
non-medical coordinator
Explains packages, prices, and schedules – but does not perform medical acts.
Think of them as a mix of “coordinator + customer service”.
Nurse / Assistant (KR: 간호사, 간호조무사)
clinical support staff
Prepares rooms, assists the doctor, and guides you through each step inside the clinic.
2. Booking & Visit Flow · 예약부터 상담까지 흐름
Most K-clinics work by reservation, but the process is simple once you know the basic words.
Below is the typical flow: Booking → Check-in → Waiting → Consultation.
2-1. Booking Words · 예약 관련 표현
Reservation / Booking (KR: 예약)

You can book via phone, KakaoTalk, website, or app.
Simple Korean phrase:
“예약하고 방문할게요.” – “I’ll make a booking and visit.”
First-time Visit (KR: 초진)
first visit to the clinic
On your first visit, you usually fill out basic information and consent forms.
“초진” literally means “first diagnosis/first consultation”.
Follow-up Visit (KR: 재진, 경과 방문)
follow-up / check-up visit
Later visits to check progress or discuss next steps.
The details are always explained at the clinic – timing, purpose, what will happen, etc.
2-2. At the Front Desk · 접수·대기·상담
Reception (KR: 접수)

You say your name and reservation time, and sometimes fill out a short form.
Staff may ask: “성함이 어떻게 되세요?” – “What’s your name?”
Waiting Room (KR: 대기실)

Many K-clinics are designed like a hotel lobby – bright, clean, and quiet.
Consultation (KR: 상담)

A talk with staff or doctor to hear explanations, options, and prices.
You can absolutely just listen and leave without deciding anything.
K-Clinic Culture Tip
In Korea it’s very normal to say:
“상담만 먼저 받아 보고 생각해 볼게요.” – “I’ll just get a consultation first and think about it.”
You don’t have to decide on the spot.
3. Treatment & Care Words (Concept Only) · 자주 나오는 단어 의미
These words appear on websites, banners, and during consultations.
We only explain their language meaning, not medical details.
3-1. Very Common Words
Treatment / Procedure (KR: 시술)
generic word for many procedures
“시술” is a broad word used for many non-surgical procedures.
What it actually includes differs by clinic, so details are always explained case by case.
Care / Management (KR: 관리)
care sessions, usually repeated
Used for regular skin-care style sessions: cleansing, masks, device-based care, massages, etc.
You’ll see phrases like “기초관리, 진정관리, 탄력관리” on brochures.
Package (KR: 패키지)
bundle of multiple sessions
A set of sessions sold together.
Always check what is included, how many visits, and how long it’s valid.
3-2. Course, Program & “After care”
Course / Program (KR: 코스, 프로그램)

For example, “brightening course” or “basic skin program”.
It’s a marketing word that describes the overall structure rather than a single act.
Before & After Photo (KR: 비포·애프터 사진)

Shows appearance before and after a certain program.
In Korea, photo use usually involves separate consent – you can always ask how your photos are handled.
Soothing / Cooling (KR: 진정, 쿨링)

Many programs mention a “cooling” or “soothing” step at the end.

4. Price, Events & Payment · 가격 설명과 이벤트 문화
A big part of K-clinic culture is events, packages, and payment options.
Here’s how common terms look in English and Korean.

| Refund Policy | 환불 규정 | Rules about cancellation and refund; always ask to see them clearly before signing anything. |
How Koreans talk about price
It’s common to hear: “오늘 계약하시면 이벤트 적용돼요.” – “If you sign today, the promotion applies.”
If you need time, a polite answer is:
“생각해 보고 다시 연락드릴게요.” – “I’ll think about it and contact you later.”
5. Etiquette & Survival Phrases · 에티켓과 실전 표현
Finally, here are phrases that make communication smoother.
They are not medical advice – just practical language you can actually use.
5-1. Basic Etiquette
- If you’ll be late, sending a short message or calling is appreciated.
- You can always ask for more explanation:
“이 부분을 조금 더 설명해 주실 수 있을까요?” – “Could you explain this part a bit more?”
- It’s normal to double-check price and refund rules before deciding.
- Photo/video of the interior is usually okay, but avoid filming staff closely without permission.
5-2. Survival Phrases (EN ↔ KR)
“I’d like to have a consultation first.”
KR: “상담만 먼저 받아 보고 싶어요.”
Use this if you want information without committing to anything yet.
“What time slots are available for a booking?”
KR: “예약 가능한 시간대가 어떻게 되나요?”
Works well in phone calls, KakaoTalk chats, or at the front desk.
“Is it okay if I just hear the explanation today and decide later?”
KR: “오늘은 설명만 듣고, 나중에 결정해도 될까요?”
A polite way to slow things down and think calmly.
“Could you explain the contract and refund policy once again?”
KR: “계약·환불 규정을 한 번 더 설명해 주세요.”
Very useful when packages and long-term programs are involved.
