Short Track Rules & Judging Explained
쇼트트랙 경기 규칙과 판정 포인트

1) The Basics
EN — Races are held on a 111.12m oval track. Multiple skaters compete at the same time, and the first across the line wins — unless a penalty changes the result.
KR — 111.12m 트랙에서 여러 선수가 동시에 경기하며, 기본적으로 먼저 결승선을 통과한 선수가 승리합니다. 단, 페널티가 발생하면 결과가 바뀔 수 있습니다.
EN — Common Olympic distances include 500m, 1000m, 1500m, plus relay events.
KR — 올림픽에서는 500m, 1000m, 1500m 개인전과 계주 종목이 핵심입니다.
2) Common Penalties

Impeding / Obstruction
EN — Blocking or interfering with another skater’s progress.
KR — 다른 선수의 진행을 방해하거나 막는 행위. -
Lane Change / Cross Tracking
EN — Unsafe movement into another skater’s racing line.
KR — 상대의 주행 라인으로 무리하게 진입하는 행위. -
Kicking Out / Dangerous Move
EN — Risky leg or skate action causing collision risk.
KR — 다리/스케이트를 과도하게 사용해 위험을 만드는 동작. -
False Start
EN — Early movement before the official start signal.
KR — 출발 신호 전 움직임(조기 출발).
3) Yellow & Red Cards
EN — Serious violations can lead to a yellow card (disqualified in that race) and, in repeated or severe cases, a red card (removed from the event).
KR — 중대한 반칙은 옐로카드(해당 경기 실격)로 이어질 수 있고, 반복/중대 사안은 레드카드(종목 출전 배제)로 확대될 수 있습니다.
4) What is “Advancement”?
EN — Advancement may be granted when a clear rule violation by another skater affected the outcome of your race.
KR — 어드밴스는 다른 선수의 명백한 규정 위반으로 경기 결과에 영향을 받은 경우, 다음 라운드 진출을 인정하는 제도입니다.
EN — A fall alone doesn’t guarantee advancement; officials must judge that an actual violation occurred.
KR — 단순히 넘어졌다는 이유만으로 자동 인정되지 않으며, ‘규정 위반이 있었는지’가 핵심입니다.
5) Judging Focus
- EN — Did the contact change the race outcome? / KR — 접촉이 실제 순위에 영향을 줬나?
- EN — Was the move avoidable or reckless? / KR — 회피 가능했나, 위험했나?
- EN — Did someone enter another line unfairly? / KR — 주행 라인을 부당하게 침해했나?
- EN — Was there clear blocking/impeding intent? / KR — 의도적 방해가 있었나?
6) Why Controversy Happens
EN — Tight corners and high speed make borderline situations common, so interpretation matters as much as the action itself.
KR — 고속·밀집·코너 집중 구조라 경계선 상황이 자주 발생하고, ‘해석’이 결과에 큰 영향을 줍니다.
